Servicing NYC and Long Island
The OPWDD process is a multi-step process. Each intake process varies based on the individual’s profile, diagnosis, and the documentation you already have.
This overview outlines the main steps; our dedicated Intake Team will help you manage the details throughout so you have guidance and clarity about your specific circumstances.
First, apply for OPWDD eligibility. Applying for OPWDD eligibility typically takes about 2 months if you have already completed the necessary evaluations. You’ll have to compile the documents, submit them, and receive approval from the OPWDD office.
If you haven’t yet completed the evaluations, expect the process to take approximately 4-6 months.
If your application isn’t immediately approved, it can be passed onto a second, and then possibly a third layer of review, which extends the process. Denials can be appealed; it’s a lengthy process handled by the CCO (care coordination organization).
If you apply when your child is under eight years old, you’ll update their provisional eligibility to permanent eligibility when he turns eight, which may require new evaluations.
Next, apply for waiver services. This step typically takes 3-5 months. You’ll be assigned a Care Coordination Organization care manager if you don’t yet have one, complete an over-the-phone CANS (Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths) or CAS (Cognitive Assessment System) assessment, and attend a meeting to create a lifeplan – a document outlining personal strengths, abilities, and goals.
Then, your care manager will request the specific waiver services — such as Respite, ComHab, Vocational Services, Self-Direction, and Group Homes — that will benefit you most. Once you receive approval, you can enroll in services and start receiving support!
