Avigail’s accomplishments — a DSP shares her story

When I answered a classified ad looking for a DSP in 2015, I never dreamed I would still be with the same family nine years later! The journey I’ve taken with this incredible family has been a life-changing experience for me, bringing so much joy and meaning into my life.

Back when I started, the family was grappling with the challenges of raising five-year-old twins, both with developmental delays. The twins were dependent on their mother for everything. Dressing, cleaning, and feeding — she was essentially dealing with two five-year-old toddlers. They were not reaching milestones, were difficult to manage in public, and could never tolerate too much noise. The struggle was real.

Over the last nine years, the twins have made remarkable progress! Ita*, once nonverbal, now engages with the world. She can follow directions, make eye contact, mirror the actions of others, dance to music, and so much more. She enjoys going out and meeting people and has become a vibrant participant in social events.

Dovid*, a higher-functioning child, has blossomed in many areas as well. He can read books, solve puzzles, make phone calls, and go to the store independently. At Dovid’s recent bar mitzvah, I felt as if I was celebrating the bar mitzvah of my own brother! Hamaspik gifted him with a kiddush cup, a poignant acknowledgment of this milestone event and his hard-won progress.

I feel so humbled and grateful to have had a hand in their progress and been a part of their journey with Hamaspik. Hamaspik has truly been there for both me and this family throughout the time I have been here. The coordinator and other Hamaspik staff members keep in touch regularly, ensuring everything is going well, and offering support in any way I need.
