How do I qualify for respite?

Respite care offers caregivers a chance to rest and recharge — and gives individuals with disabilities meaningful, supportive companionship.

In New York, respite is funded through the OPWDD-HCBS (Home and Community Based Services) waiver. To qualify, the individual must first be found eligible through the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).

OPWDD eligibility generally requires:

• Documentation of a developmental disability that began before age 22
  
• Evidence of significantly impaired functioning
  
• A New York State address
  

Once eligibility is established, you can formally request respite services. If approved, this opens the door to much-needed relief for caregivers and personalized support designed around the individual’s specific needs.
