What assistance is available for people with disabilities?

New York State has developed several programs to support individuals with disabilities.

For children under three years old, Early Intervention provides a wide range of therapies and supports for growth and development, all of which are fully funded for eligible families.

For individuals with developmental disabilities — including autism, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, and several others — OPWDD (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities) services can connect you to a variety of supports, provided eligibility criteria are met and services are approved.

While the qualifying condition must have originated or been diagnosed before age 22, OPWDD approval opens the door to services and support for life. There is no expiration date; OPWDD is a long-term system of care that grows and evolves alongside the individual.

That support looks different at each stage of life. Young children may access early therapies, school-based support, and respite services that give their caregivers a much-needed break.

As they transition into adulthood, services can shift toward community habilitation, day programs, vocational training, and — when appropriate — supported or residential housing.

OPWDD services can include:

Hamaspik can help you navigate the process of accessing services and support. Having guided thousands of families through the OPWDD application process, we know firsthand that the path to services isn't always straightforward — especially for adults who may not have received a formal diagnosis or documentation until later in life.

If you are over 21 and were never connected to services, it may not be too late. As long as there is documentation showing that the disability originated before age 22, our team can work with you to obtain eligibility and identify the support that may be available to you.
