Can a child with ASD go to a regular school?

Yes, some children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) do attend regular schools. Depending on your child’s needs, personality, and capabilities, you may decide that a mainstream school is the right place for your child.

In the United States, schools are required by law to provide education to children with disabilities in the least restrictive environment possible. In practice, that means your child has a legal right to the support and services that allow them to learn and participate — whatever setting they're in.

In our work with families, we've seen children with ASD thrive in general education classrooms with the right support, and we've also seen children who needed more intensive help in order to thrive. The setting matters less than the fit.

Some children with ASD do well in a regular classroom providing they receive accommodations, such as additional time to complete schoolwork and tests, sensory breaks when they feel overloaded, or help handling transitions.

Other children may need more extensive support through special education services. This can include things like speech therapy, occupational therapy, or a classroom aide. There is no one-size-fits-all. Every child’s needs are different, and their support will be customized for them through an IEP (Individualized Education Program) or a 504 plan. (An IEP is for children who need special education services, while a 504 plan is for children who can succeed in a regular classroom with accommodations.)

For some children, a general classroom may not be the best fit, even with accommodations. Sometimes a child will do better with fewer classmates, more structure, or a specialized program to help them reach their full potential.

Keep in mind that your child’s school placement is not permanent. Their placement will be reviewed regularly and can be changed as your child grows and their needs evolve.

The goal is always the same: to help every child learn, feel supported, and make meaningful progress in the setting that’s right for them.
