What benefits can you get for a child with special needs?

Raising a child with special needs is hard, but support is available. There's a range of benefits available in New York State — and knowing what to ask for can lighten your load.

If your child has developmental delays, they may qualify for early intervention services (from birth until age three), funded by New York State. Early intervention can provide a range of therapies, including physical, occupational, speech, feeding, and ABA.

If you're the primary caregiver, family support services can provide limited reimbursement for specific, eligible out-of-pocket expenses, to help offset costs.

OPWDD services are the most robust set of supports New York State offers to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. If you need a break, respite care gives caregivers time off while your child is supported by a trained respite worker.

If your family needs financial support, your child may qualify for monthly income through SSI (Supplemental Security Income) or SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance), depending on your household income and your child's medical eligibility.
