How do they test for autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cannot be diagnosed through a blood test, brain scan, or a single medical test.

Instead, a clinical evaluation is conducted. A qualified professional reviews the child’s development, communication skills, and behaviors before making a diagnosis.

ASD evaluations can be conducted by many professionals, such as licensed psychologists, developmental pediatricians, psychiatrists, and neurologists.

What you can expect at a clinical evaluation:

  • Review of the child’s developmental history
  • Observation of the child’s behavior, language, and social skills
  • Conversations with parents/caregivers
  • Review of school or medical records
  • Use of structured diagnostic tools such as ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale), and Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales

Once the clinical evaluation is complete, the evaluator will review the findings and decide if the child meets the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is an official checklist of criteria used to diagnose autism.
