If you’re eligible for OPWDD services, you can choose to receive support through the self-direction option. As the name suggests, self-direction gives you more control and flexibility over how your services are given. This option is in place of traditional services, in which Hamaspik manages all paperwork, and organizes support-workers and programs. 

With self-direction, you receive a budget that you can allocate to approved services such as respite, community habilitation, community classes, transportation, and more. While there are OPWDD rules and limitations for each budget category, self-direction offers greater flexibility in how you access services, allocate funds, and pay your providers.

To get started, you’ll work with a broker who will help create your budget, and will suggest classes, activities, and resources in the community. Hamaspik will serve as your Fiscal Intermediary, handling expense submissions, funding, and provider payments. You will be responsible for keeping track of receipts and submitting the necessary paperwork for each expense. 

Your Hamaspik coordinator will help you track your spending to ensure you stay within limits. Our dedicated preapproval team will handle all expenses that require additional approval, including classes, memberships, and household items.
