Did you ever get advice you didn’t ask for?

Felt judged by someone who had no idea what you were going through?

Got criticism when you needed support?

We asked the parents of children with special needs:
“What’s ONE message you want to share with the world?”

And they shared – about the judgment they face.
The painful criticism, the unsolicited advice.

Strangers in the grocery store offer parenting advice (for the child they’ve just met).
Sisters-in-law roll their eyes at the tantrums.
Relatives ask why they don’t just try to control their child.

And they bite their tongue.

We’re honored to finally share the message they’ve kept inside:

Please stop labeling my child’s hidden disability as “bad parenting.”

If my child seems out of control, chances are… he really is. And no parenting method in the world can flip that switch.

Sometimes there’s NO simple answer. No quick fix. No parenting tip that will change the reality.

I can’t calm my special needs child. They tantrum because they’re easily overwhelmed, not because I haven’t tried hard enough.

I know my parenting choices don’t look ideal, but they’re what help my child feel safe in the storm of anxiety.

At Hamaspik of Kings County, we’ve been offering services and support to people with special needs and their families for over two decades.
